My Approach

游本寬1989年初自美返國以來，一直藉由在國內各大學的影像藝術教學和創作發表，推展以消音、靜態影像為主，並結合美術思維的「美術攝影」（Fine Art Photography）創作。

1992年，他首先將Fine Art Photography譯名為「美術攝影」，提出「照像‧造像」的創作觀，並以傳統照片、「攝影藝術書」和影像裝置形式，在多國舉辦展覽，呼應自己所倡導的「美術攝影」。

游本寬的影像，無論是單張或多張複合，常採用繁複的構成、尺寸意義、觀眾參與的意念等，促使觀影活動猶如虛擬的拍照行為。早期著重「觀念藝術」式的拍照，近期則偏向對台灣當代視覺文化的思維，以日常顯現的景觀及其文化產物為內容，持續發表「閱讀台灣」的系列影像。

Ben Yu is currently an adjunct professor of visual art at National Chengchi University in Taipei, Taiwan.

Mr. Yu has exhibited his work internationally in Paris, Berlin, Yokohama, Seoul, Beijing, Shanghai, Philadelphia, New York, and Taiwan. Through the complex juxtapositions of images, Ben’s work explores a visual language that examines cultural identity and characteristics of the commonplace.

He lives and works in Pennsylvania and Taiwan.

（一）並置的複合影像

將單張照片並置、排組成巨大影像，藉觀看時身體移動所產生的漂浮視點，表現繁複、碎斷的影像記事。代表作品：

＜蘇珊的日記第三十六頁＞（1998），240 × 195 cm
＜周五天氣預報－－晴時多雲＞（1998），240 × 130 cm
＜真假之間＞動物系列（II）（1997），300 × 1500 cm

（二）影像裝置

依表述內容將照片做非平面化的吊掛，呈現多方位視野的影像藝術。代表作有：

將52個猶如“影像磚”的燈箱，砌成一座象徵生活日記本的影像牆：＜家庭照相本，燈箱系列＞（1996）。
＜無止境＞（1988）：以地面的水和天空白雲間做無限轉換的情形為意象，以照片群組成一個靜、動對話的影像空間。同一件作品在2000年重新發表時，則以水中的魚為焦點，透過大型影像輸出的垂釣形式，呈現濃郁的趣味性空間。
＜懷特兄弟＞（1990）：將十來張雲朵及腳踏車照片裱褙在透明的長膠膜內，然後懸浮在展場上空。
在密閉空間內，由三部連續自播的幻燈機，加上擴音的機械音效，交錯成：＜法國椅子在台灣──觀光旅遊系列＞幻燈影像裝置。
＜真假之間＞投影裝置（1998，2001）：將一系列有關台灣環境的影像，持續地投射在壁上的凹洞或空箱內。
2004年Co4展中，以兩張一個樓高的巨幅影像包夾出一塊似cheese cake型的三角立體造形，中間隨意堆砌著帶本位意含的「在地紙箱」，並在上面連續地投映《真假之間》系列影像，暗徵台灣慣有眾多、物超所值的口氣。至於仿製外來糕點造形的省思是：廣納入口之後，緊縮出口的自限。

（三）「觀念攝影」

理論上，「觀念攝影」不是攝影史中既定的風格名詞，它所指的是：觀念藝術家以攝影術為主要工具（尤其是經由拍照），表現或記錄個人觀念的方式。「觀念攝影」不以表現傳統攝影特質為主，而著重在檢視攝影的本質思維，例如︰不同期的《家庭照相簿》和《法國椅子在台灣》系列，便是藉由現實生活中，明信片和觀光照片影像基模，所呈想的影像藝術形式。除此之外，還有以下的例子：

＜十九幅光的作品＞（1988）：作者在展場地面上鋪置了十八張有黑色倒影的自拍照，然後配合現場燈光投射在觀眾背後所造成「第十九個黑影」的現象，論述個人對PHOTO-GRAPHY「光性書寫」的另類思索。
＜水果照片＞（1990）：一組以水果為演員的表演紀錄照片。
＜有關於高更＞（1989）：將高更名畫中的影像挪用、轉印在個人照片裡。
《法國椅子在台灣──觀光旅遊系列》（1997-99），將一把由法國進口的椅子，放置在台灣各個角落拍照。然後再把這些類似旅遊照片的結果送回椅子原產地——法國展出。整件作品，除照片結果的圖像意義之外，還意圖藉影像在異國間的運送，觸及異域文化的解讀。
《法國椅子在台灣，觀光旅遊系列》＜鶯歌雨中即景＞（1999，2002）：將覆蓋有塑膠布椅子的影像，輸出在巨大塑膠帆布上（230 × 365 cm），經由後製材質調侃影像真實的信念。
《台灣房子──柏林櫥櫃系列》（2000）：將印有台灣房子影像的襯衫請柏林人穿著，然後在每個人的儲衣櫃前拍照。
《私人展覽》觀念藝術活動（2003）：透過郵寄方式，將作品《真假之間》以及《台灣新郎》兩本精緻的影像集，同時寄給近百位（未曾見過面）的中、外讀者，三個月後再寄回給作者。

（四）「地誌式鏡像」與影像訊息收集

藉由中距離、正面取景以及平面順光等彩色「鏡像」形式，從訊息的概念出發，思索「數量」在藝術中的角色。代表作品有：

閱讀台灣系列之一：《真假之間》動物及肖像系列。
閱讀台灣系列之二：《法國椅子在台灣，觀光旅遊系列》。
閱讀台灣系列之三：《台灣房子》系列，民舍、商家、宗教建物專題。
閱讀台灣系列之四：《永續寶島》、《福爾摩莎公共藝術》系列

（五）「數位藝術家書本」的形式再思

由於數位印刷術的精進，當代攝影家已能將印刷廠視為另一種傳統暗房的替代場所，讓非單一的「數位複製照片」成為可行。《真假之間》及《台灣新郎》兩本書用採用類似展場照片大小（25 ×38公分）來設計，前者更以折頁形式，將所有的影像串成十八公尺長的「圖象河」。《台灣新郎》則是將圖、文做上下對應，讓翻閱過程如同面對一幕幕紙本話劇般。
